Early years

He was born on November 19, 1944, in Monesterio, a small town in Badajoz, in western Spain. His childhood was marked by a deep interest in drawing and painting, which led him to explore his artistic talent from an early age. Naranjo’s formal art education began at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he honed his skills in painting and drawing, two disciplines he would master throughout his life. However, it was at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid, where his academic training and his approach to realism became firmly established.

During his time at the academy, Naranjo was influenced by artists such as Antonio López and José Royo, two great masters of Spanish realism. It was during this period that he was introduced to the concept of representing reality in an almost photographic manner. However, Naranjo was not limited to visual realism. His work evolved toward symbolism and an introspective approach that was essential to his development as an artist.

Artistic evolution

Symbolism is a distinctive feature of his work. He often uses seemingly ordinary objects and scenes, such as a person’s face, a landscape, or a still life, to explore more complex themes such as spirituality, the passage of time, or the human condition. In this sense, his works can be seen as a bridge between the tradition of classical realism and more modern concerns about what reality is and how we perceive it.

Naranjo has shown a preference for portraits and landscapes, in which he is able to capture not only the subjects’ external appearance but also an emotional dimension that brings them to life. Naranjo’s portraits are not mere physical representations; they are profound psychological portrayals, capturing the nuances of the human soul. His landscapes, for their part, are evocative and often seem to emerge from dreams, with skies charged with emotion and a treatment of light and shadow that reinforces the mystical atmosphere of his scenes.
